Team India will get a new coach after the WC, Rahul Dravid is unlikely to continue

Rahul Dravid’s contract expires after the 2023 World Cup. Although there have been no formal discussions, he is likely to quit after the tournament even if India ends up winning the trophy.

Whether India win the 2023 World Cup or not, coach Rahul Dravid can take a step back. He is unlikely to renew his contract after the big event. According to close sources, Dravid is upset with the many trips with the India Cricket Team and the lack of time with his family. It was a contentious issue that BCCI secretary Jay Shah and then president Sourav Ganguly spoke to him about when he took over from Ravi Shastri in 2021.

“It’s been a tough journey for him. Rahul likes a tidy life and that’s why he didn’t want to take up work initially. He had to manage his family as well as travel with the team on long tours. He will accept his future even if India win the World Cup.” a BCCI source told InsideSport.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) denies this. An official said BCCI will hold talks with Rahul Dravid before or after the World Cup for his renewal. But for now, the focus is on winning the 2023 World Cup.

“There have been no discussions with Rahul about an extension or renewal. We are all focused on the World Cup at the moment. But yes, we will have a discussion with Rahul before the WC and prepare a contingency around that. So far, we have received no indication that he does not want to continue.” a top BCCI official told InsideSport.

Since taking over from Ravi Shastri after T20 WC 2021, Rahul Dravid has had a mixed record. While under him, India have asserted dominance at home, losing just one series to Australia. However, India have lost to South Africa in both Test and ODI series away, Bangladesh in away ODI series as well as Asia Cup, T20 World Cup and WTC final.

With India eyeing a Test restart with a transition of older players, the BCCI may well look for new ideas and perhaps abroad. There have been rumors that Andy Flower is the one India are considering. But at this stage, the BCCI has not contacted the former Lucknow Super Giants coach or held talks with anyone else.

If Rahul Dravid and BCCI part ways, VVS Laxman might be a good option. He has been the director of the National Cricket Academy and has already been named as the successor. At the moment, however, there have been no discussions for a permanent coaching role. Laxman has been training while Dravid has been on breaks.
