Rome’s Ryder Cup venue is on fire: smoke billows from the golf course where European golf stars triumphed over the United States, and an investigation into the blaze is ongoing

This afternoon, firefighters fought a huge fire on the luxurious golf course where Europe sensationally won last week’s Ryder Cup tournament by defeating the United States.

Dozens of fire and police crews were called to a temporary hospitality building at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome at 5:07 p.m. to deal with a massive inferno that sent flames and smoke shooting into the sky.

The fire engulfed the three-story grandstand to the right of the first fairway, where hundreds of spectators gathered for the tournament last week.

One witness told local media: “The smoke and flames are amazing. It is huge and the heat can be felt from a distance.

After the fire, the stand remained an empty shell, although no one was injured and the fire took hold of the temporary building. Ryder Cup Europe said it was investigating the cause of the fire.

Ryder Cup Europe released a statement that read: “A fire was reported this afternoon at one of the temporary hospitality facilities to the right of the first fairway at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

“Local fire crews were called to the scene at 5:07 p.m. local time and quickly brought the fire under control. No one was injured in the incident and the fire did not spread beyond the guest facility. There was no damage to the golf course or any other structure. The causes of the fire are currently under investigation.

A spokesman for the Italian Golf Federation said: “The fire broke out in a stand prepared for the Ryder Cup and it is being dismantled, but that’s all we know.”

The fire broke out on the first hole, and video posted online stated that despite the massive blaze, golfers could still be seen playing the 18th hole.

According to Sky News, authorities at one point considered evacuating homes in Rome’s northeastern suburb of Guidonia, but it was decided this was not necessary once the fire was under control.

The grandstand built for last week’s tournament hosted spectators and housed bars and restaurants throughout the three-day event.

Officials said it was made of metal, wood and covered in plastic, which caused the fire to spread and smoke quickly because it is highly flammable.

The grandstand, which took several months to build, was dismantled so that the field could be back to normal by December.

There were unconfirmed reports in the Italian media that the cause of the fire was fuel or gas canisters left by catering companies.

On Thursday, just a few days after the organization of the Ryder Cup 2023 tournament, there was a fire at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome.

Ryder Cup Europe said firefighters were called at 5:07 p.m. today and that an investigation into the fire was ongoing.

Luke Donald’s European team claimed an emphatic 16.5-11.5 victory over Zach Johnson’s American team, erasing the consternation of their 2021 defeat at Whistling Straits.

Donald’s men cruised to victory over the USA after a blistering start in which they quickly gained the advantage before Rory McIlroy hit a phenomenal golf shot to help them secure victory.

McIlroy was Rome’s top scorer, taking four points as Donald’s team regained the trophy, and later admitted that Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and himself felt emboldened to improve their chances. In total, they scored 10.5 of Europe’s 16.5 points.

He said: “They have had unbelievable Ryder Cup careers and the choices they have made. No one can take away the impact they have had on Europe over the years.

“But this week not having such big names in the team gave the other guys a chance to blossom and shine: Viktor, Jon and me. Some other great personalities did not occupy much space in this room. We are a young team.

“We can all grow together. Next time I could potentially be the oldest person on the team. It’s a new era. And a pretty good one at that.
