HOUSTON – Here’s what Carlos Correa had to say about his poor showing in August, when he played through plantar fasciitis pain and a record number of players on the field en route to the worst results of his career all season:
I hope we can make it to the play-offs and it will be worth it.
It was worth it for the Twins, right.
Correa, one of the all-time great October hitters, capped off his unforgettable regular season to once again become a postseason titan, tying David Justice for third place in American League/National League history in postseason RBIs with an RBI double and a double single that provided The Twins earned a 6-2 victory over the Astros in a key second game of the AL Division Series on Sunday night at Minute Maid Park.
That gave Correa 63 RBIs in the postseason, who currently trails only Bernie Williams (80) and Manny Ramirez (78) on the leaderboard.
“This is the reason we do this,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said in an in-game interview with FS1. “The light doesn’t find Correa, he is the light in many ways for our team. He was missing four holes, but when I looked up and saw we were dealing with a left-hander, it looked like, well, he wants it, so I gave it to him.”
After Minnesota’s lackluster Game 1 loss, the Twins firmly stated that yes, they could keep pace with – and dominate – any day in the playoffs, including the defending World Series champions.
They have ace Pablo López, who became the third pitcher in franchise history to throw at least seven consecutive innings in the postseason, joining Johan Santana in Game 1 of the ALDS in 2004 and Jack Morris in the legendary Game 7 of the 1991 World Series.
And they have their own stop for the superstar. They paid him $200 million for those moments.
“He keeps you on offense,” Correa’s López said. “It keeps you engaged in the game. It takes a guy’s commitment to get everyone to behave like this. So Carlos Correa is as good as it can be as a leader, player and teammate.”
Correa’s two-out single in the first inning, an RBI double off Astros starter Framber Valdez gave the Twins their first lead in the series after trailing from start to finish in the first game. When Minnesota had a chance to increase its lead in the fifth set, Correa came into action once again with a two-run, rules-filled single that knocked Valdez out of the game.
“He’s always an excellent player, but when it matters most, he can really focus his attention, direct it, focus it and just play even better every time,” Baldelli said of Correa. “It’s not a coincidence. It’s definitely not a lottery. He keeps hitting the right time.”
The moment Correa landed the big hit couldn’t have been more significant for the Twins. Although the loser of the first game of the Division Series in the current 2-2-1 format won the series only 28% of the time, when such series were tied after two games, the club returned home for Games 3 and 4 ended with a series victory 28 of 42 times (67%).
Overall, Correa went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single, a walk and three RBI, giving him an 8-for-15 mark in the Twins’ first four games of the 2023 postseason.
If only it ended there, as this postseason has already been a bona fide reminder of Correa’s exemplary defense and baseball instincts.
There was a play in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series in which he stunned the Blue Jays by backing up on the soft ground in no man’s land and making an off-balance, all-or-nothing throw to home to catch Bo Bichette at the plate. There was a breakthrough pickoff of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from second base, which he arranged in the second game. José Abreu stunned the veteran as he tried to get to second on a wild pitch in Game 1 of the ALDS .
And now all this with a stick in his hands.
“It’s a job he’s been working on his whole life, when you see him step on the field to do things like that,” Baldelli said. “We’re not surprised.”
Correa said Astros fans approached him and his family as they ate dinner and breakfast in Houston before the first game to wish him luck. They then cheered him warmly when it was announced that he would be in the Twins’ starting lineup before the first game.
As time went on during these two games in Houston, the enthusiasm of Correa’s fans gradually waned. Then the boos began to mix with cheers. At the end of the second game, he was greeted by loud boos every time.
It took a while for Houston fans to remember that Correa’s October was inevitable.
Only now it’s at their expense.
